What, not why or whether

Three words govern every page of the book, and every tool on this site.

What

Dimensions, volumes, rates, durations, appearance, materials. This is the whole of the book's business.

Why — excluded by definition

Where a passage presents an event as miraculous, it presents a suspension of natural law. A scientific account of the mechanism is therefore not a hard question but a malformed one. The book does not attempt it, and does not treat the absence as a gap.

Whether — excluded by stipulation

The described event is the given. The book describes the given. It never argues that the text is scientifically accurate, and it never argues that it is contradicted.


This is a method, not a refusal

The apologetics shelf tries to naturalize the miraculous — a strong east wind, a shallow sea, a comet in the right year. The skeptic shelf dissolves it. Both are answering why or whether. This book answers neither, and that ground is unoccupied.

What it does instead is arithmetic. Given a crossing on dry ground completed within a night by a body of people the text elsewhere numbers, what column geometry follows, and what corridor width? Given a tunnel 1,749 feet (533 meters) long with a fall of 11.8 inches (30 centimeters), what gradient follows, and how much rock was carried by hand through an opening about 24 inches (60 centimeters) wide? The questions are answerable, and answering them requires taking no position on anything contested.

Five rules, enforced mechanically

  1. The book never argues that the Bible is scientifically accurate. It is not apologetics.
  2. The book never argues that the Bible contradicts science. It is not skepticism.
  3. Where text and science diverge, the book states what the text says, states what the science says, and stops.
  4. Language framing science as validating or undermining faith is prohibited outright — a literal word list, banned in both directions.
  5. No computation is ever presented as a test. The book computes what a described state contained, never what it would have required.

A point in the sentence, the range in the table

Every quantity appears in the prose as one number. Alternatives live in a sensitivity table, never inside a sentence. A sentence carrying "between 165 and 1,805 feet" is unreadable; a table showing which assumption drives that spread is both readable and more informative.

Two guards keep it honest. Every derived point carries a naming word — working value, modeled, assumed, illustrative, floor — because a bare number reads as a measurement. And where no basis exists for choosing, the entry takes the conservative end, calls it a floor, and says which direction it is conservative in.

The comparison set is where the argument hides

Computation is safe. Comparison is not. A corridor of these dimensions holds back this volume of water is description. The force involved is forty times a category-five hurricane is a feasibility verdict wearing description's clothes. The failure runs both directions: a comparison that comes out comfortable reads as apologetics exactly as fast as one that comes out extreme reads as debunking.

Every comparison must survive one question: would it have been chosen if the number had come out the other way?

The standing scope note

This spread describes the event as the passage gives it. The cause is outside the scope of this book.

Fixed wording, never adapted to the passage. Varying it would make it emphasis, and emphasis is commentary. The book does not state what physical law a described state would violate — that is a why claim under any reading.

The cubit

One cubit is 18 inches (45.72 centimeters) throughout the book and throughout this site. It is a declared convention, not an estimate. At 18 inches the U.S.-customary conversion is exact and can be done in the head: 300 cubits is 450 feet, 50 is 75, 10 is 15. The unit workbench carries the attested alternatives and rescales everything here to any of them.

Sources

For ordinary biblical details, the CSB, ESV, or NIV is sufficient; where those translations materially differ, the NIV supplies the working reading. Peer-reviewed literature, published excavation reports, primary metrological studies, and official institutional data support modern specialist facts. Critical editions may be consulted when a translation issue itself matters, but are not required for ordinary details. Apologetics literature and skeptic literature are excluded entirely, symmetrically.
